And the Red Dot goes to...

The new landmark terminal at Azerbaijan’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport recently opened in the country’s capital of Baku featuring interior architecture and experiential design by Autoban studio, wins the prestigious Red Dot Design Award in 2014.

This airport is the principal airport of Azerbaijan, and potentially a major hub for the whole Caucasus region. The facility covers an area of 58,000 square meters. Autoban is responsible of 45,000 square meters of interior which means all the locations for the passengers. The aim of the aesthetic design is to create spaces, which encourage relaxation and minimize stress. This is achieved through generously proportioned, naturally lit spaces with extensive internal and external views.

Technologic and functional materials are used together with the warm materials like wood and leather that gives the feeling of being secure, relaxed and far away from the stress of a cliché atmosphere of an airport. That’s why Autoban has replaced a number of cocoons for different functions. These cocoons serve as different social functions. The usage of organic forms helped to convert the space into a more intimate environment. Taking inspiration from Azerbaijani hospitality, Autoban’s Red Dot award-winning design spans the entirety of the terminal’s passenger spaces, and includes striking custom-made wooden ‘cocoons’ that create a sense of welcome and discovery, and opportunities to either meet or retreat.
